Memphis Police Officer Terrence Olridge was shot while on his way to work.
An off-duty police officer was shot and killed Sunday in Cordova, Tennessee, Memphis' WHBQ-TV reports.
Here's what we know so far:
1. The officer, Terence Olridge, joined the Memphis Police Department
in September 2014. According to WHBQ, Olridge, 31, was on his way to
work about 1 p.m. Sunday when he was shot multiple times near his home.
“We just got a call, told us he'd been shot on his way to work, that
he made his way back to the door some kind of way,” Jerry Kelly,
Oldridge’s uncle, told WHBQ. “I don't know exactly how he made it back,
but made it back to the garage door.”
Olridge was taken to nearby Regional One hospital, where he later died.
2. Olridge's fiancee was four months' pregnant with their first child. The couple had planned to marry later this year.
3. A suspect is in custody. Police told WHBQ that they are not releasing the suspect's name until charges have been filed.
4. This is the second time in 72 days that a Memphis officer has been
killed. In August, Officer Sean Bolton, 33, was fatally shot in the Fox
Meadows area of the city. Tremaine Wilbourn, 29, was charged with
first-degree murder in that case.
"Please continue to pray for this police department," Memphis Police
Department Director Toney Armstrong said at a news conference Sunday.
"It wasn't very long ago that I stood in close proximity to where I'm
standing now and said something very similar to what I am saying now. It
just doesn't get any easier. I didn't think we would be here so soon."
5. Government officials are speaking out and offering their
condolences. "Today, the collective heart of the city is broken,"
Memphis Mayor-Elect Jim Strickland said in a statement. "My prayers go
out to the family and friends of Officer Olridge."
Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell added, "All of us at Shelby County
Government express our sympathy about the tragic death of Officer
Terence Olridge. We are keeping his family and fellow officers with the
Memphis Police Department in our thoughts and prayers."
